The EX30 will be available in a single variant and a single 69 kWh battery option in India

Volvo India has unveiled the Volvo EX30 as their latest product on our shores. It is expected to be launched by September 2025, with deliveries starting a month later. It will be Volvo’s smallest and entry-level electric SUV, yet it carries familiar styling cues, a long list of features, a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and a single powertrain option. If this baby Volvo has caught your attention, here are all the details you need to know:
Design

The front of the Volvo EX30 looks stylish and futuristic with a closed-off grille and commands attention, thanks to its ‘Thor’s Hammer’ styled LED DRLs. The Volvo logo sits prominently in the middle with a simple horizontal bar running across, and the bumper has neat air intakes at the bottom for cooling the battery pack and electronics.

In profile, the roof slopes slightly towards the rear. The black cladding runs along the lower body without extending over the wheel arches. The 19-inch alloy wheels with aerodynamic design complete its EV styling. The outside rear view mirrors have a quirk, as in when you adjust them electrically, the whole mirror housing moves instead of just the glass inside.

The rear of the Volvo EX30 looks curvy, carrying Volvo’s signature style. It gets split LED tail lamps, with a vertical strip running up the C-pillars and an L-shaped section below. On top, there’s a roof-mounted spoiler with an integrated stop lamp, while the black bumper adds a rugged touch.
Interior

The cabin of the Volvo EX30 has a plush feel and a minimalistic design with a light grey and black dual-tone cabin theme. It has a clean dashboard layout with a 3-spoke steering wheel and a large 12.3-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen that also shows important driving information. This screen controls almost everything in the car, including navigation, media, climate, seat adjustments, and even mirror and light settings.
The inserts on the dashboard and doors are made of recycled elements that have a granite-like finish. Unlike most cars, the power window switches and door lock controls are placed on the centre console, leaving the doors free of buttons. The front seats use a single square dial to manage all adjustments, with lumbar support offered only for the driver. There are no rear AC vents. The fixed panoramic roof is heat-insulated, but does not have a powered sunshade.
Features & Safety

The Volvo EX30 comes equipped with features like a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, dual-zone auto AC, wireless Apple CarPlay, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless phone charger, NFC card key, air purifier, and powered front seats with lumbar adjustment for the driver seat.
Its safety suite includes features such as seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, hill start assist, hill descent control, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, a blind spot monitor and an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).
Powertrain
The Volvo EX30 has a single battery option paired with a rear-axle-mounted single motor setup. The detailed specifications are as follows:
Battery Pack | 69 kWh |
No. of motor(s) | 1 |
Power | 272 PS |
Torque | 343 Nm |
Drivetrain | All-wheel drive (AWD) |
Acceleration (0-100 kmph) | 5.3 seconds |
WLTP-Claimed Range | 480 km |
Expected Price & Rivals

The Volvo EX30, upon its launch in India, could be priced at around Rs 42 lakh to Rs 44 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it can rival the Mini Cooper SE.

All three are premium electric models, expected to cost over Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom)

While the Indian Car Of The Year (ICOTY) award focuses on cars launched in India, the World Car Awards takes into consideration models that are sold in at least two continents. Recently, finalists for the World Car Of The Year 2024 were announced. The top three models, which are all EVs, are the BYD Seal, Kia EV9 and Volvo EX30. The good news is that all of them are set to be introduced in the Indian market in the near future, so let’s take a brief look at what they have to offer:
BYD Seal
Update (05/03/24): BYD has launched the Seal EV in India, with prices starting from Rs 41 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India).

Launch: March 5, 2024
Expected Price: Rs 55 lakh onwards
The BYD Seal made its first Indian appearance at the Auto Expo 2023, which is set to be launched on March 5 this year. It will be the EV maker’s third offering in India after the e6 MPV and Atto 3 SUV. It is available in three variants with multiple battery packs and electric motor configurations offering a WLTC-claimed range of up to 570 km.
Notable features include a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment display, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, wireless phone chargers, and ventilated and heated front seats. BYD has provided its safety kit with eight airbags, a 360-degree camera, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Kia EV9

Expected Launch: Second half of 2024
Expected Price: Rs 80 lakh
In 2023, the carmaker launched its flagship EV product, the Kia EV9, globally and was also showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 in a pre-production concept form. This 3-row all-electric SUV offers various battery and electric motor options, along with both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD). The EV9 boasts a claimed range of over 541 km, making it a compelling alternative to the typical luxury SUV with a petrol or diesel engine. Kia intends to introduce the EV9 to the Indian market through the completely built-up unit (CBU) route.
Kia offers the global-spec EV9 with two 12.3-inch connected displays and a 708W 14-speaker Meridian sound system. Its safety kit could include nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including forward collision avoidance assist, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
