【PCauto】In the European small electric vehicle market full of fierce competition, BYD has launched the Dolphin Surf, known as the Seagull in the Chinese automobile market. The price of this model in Europe almost shatters any possibility for European automakers to compete with BYD in the small EV segment.

The Dolphin Surf is priced at €22,990 to €30,990 in Europe, while its starting price in China is just €8,549. Even at nearly double the Chinese price, the Dolphin Surf is still cost-effective for European customers.

Moreover, the base model Dolphin Surf provides a promotional price, dropping directly to €19,990 which is even lower than the starting price of Citroen e-C3 (€21,990). Although slightly more expensive than the base model of Dacia Spring (€18,991), the Dolphin Surf offers richer configurations.

Compared with the Dacia Spring, the Dolphin Surf comes standard across all trims with a 10.1-inch rotatable touchscreen (supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, and ADAS, while the Dacia Spring lacks even a basic screen. The difference between the two is obvious.

In terms of performance, the basic Dacia Spring is equipped with a 45-horsepower motor, taking approximately 19.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. In contrast, the basic Dolphin Surf adopts an 88-horsepower motor, achieving the same acceleration in just 11.1 seconds—a performance level that meets the standards of mainstream family cars .

Regarding range, there is little difference between the Dolphin Surf and Dacia Spring, as both offer around 225 km under WLTP tests.
For those seeking extended range, the Dolphin Surf long-range variant provides a 43.2 kWh battery capacity, delivering up to 310 km (WLTP). Additionally, the Dolphin Surf supports DC fast charging at a maximum rate of 85 kW, enabling a 10%-80% charge in just 30 minutes.

BYD has captured significant market share in China through competitive pricing strategies. Although the Dolphin Surf is just BYD’s most basic model, it’s already causing pressure on European automakers. At the same time, BYD plans to expand its sales network in Europe. Maria Grazia Davino, Regional Managing Director for BYD Germany, stated that BYD will enter 12 new European markets this year, expanding to over 1,000 sales outlets, suggesting the impact of Dolphin Surf will likely be far-reaching.
