On Monday, Volvo Cars announced its global sales for April 2025, where it mentioned a significant 11% drop in its overall sales. In April this year, the automaker sold 58,881 units, about 45% of which were EVs. Volvo Cars, a majority stake owned by China’s Geely, also reported that sales for electric vehicles fell 32%, contributing 20% to its total sales during the month.

Sales of electrified models, including plug-in hybrids, dropped by 16%, but still, this segment accounted for 45% of Volvo’s overall car sales. The Volvo XC60 was the best-selling Volvo car in April 2025, with deliveries of 19,887 units, followed by the EX40/XC40 with 13,783 units and the XC90 with 9746 units.
While the XC60 stood at the top in terms of highest sales, the electric offerings, which include EX40, saw a decline in the market, especially in China, where brands are struggling with pricing pressure and rising competition from domestic EV brands.
Despite focusing on EVs, Volvo is facing a decline in its sales and profit. The automaker posted a 59% drop in its Q1 operating earnings and called for a swift and assertive response, leading to a EUR 1.6 billion global cost reduction program. The automaker is planning job cuts and major restructuring to improve its operational capabilities.
As the United States has announced 25% tariffs on certain imported cars, the automaker is increasing production volume in Ridgeville, South Carolina. It plans to manage the cost and ensure competitive pricing for its vehicles on sale in the US market.
