BMW to Revive Range Extenders for Next-Gen Electric SUVs?
A new industry report states that BMW is reportedly planning to bring back its range-extending engine. One of the industry sources claimed that BMW plans to bring its range-extending engine in a new form, which can be co-developed with supplier ZF.

BMW has been recognized as a pioneer in the EV segment because of its range-extending engines. The Germany-based luxury car manufacturer launched the i3 REX decades ago, comprising an optional two-cylinder engine option. This setup was initially borrowed from the Motorrad division, and the compact 647cc gas engine functioned as a generator to recharge the battery pack. It was a one-time effort from the carmaker and wasn’t packed in other models.
A new industry report states that BMW is reportedly planning to bring back its range-extending engine. One of the industry sources claimed that BMW plans to bring its range-extending engine in a new form, which can be co-developed with supplier ZF. This new engine technology will power BMW’s future range of SUVs and can debut in the next-generation X5, with the code name “G65”.
The technology may also be configured in the new generation X7, having the code name “G67′. The three-row luxury SUV is anticipated to debut in the second half of 2027. It is important to note that the existing X3 was internally named “G45,” and it is believed to be the ideal model for REX treatment; however, this update is likely to occur by its mid-cycle facelift.

BMW’s new range-extending gas engine would function on optimal RPM to maintain best-in-class fuel efficiency. The hybrid powertrain setup could be paired with the brand’s next-generation batteries, especially assuming the launch of the all-electric iX5 that will use a Gen6 pack and launch by the end of this year. These cylindrical battery cells offer 20% higher energy density and a 30% increase in overall range compared to standard prismatic batteries. If these battery units are paired with REX, the carmaker can fix the issue of range anxiety, even in its large SUVs like the X5 and X7.
BMW X5 comes in various powertrain options, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and the upcoming range-extended gas engine with batteries. However, the automaker will unlikely offer a range of extended gas engines in global-spec variants. Instead, the option will be limited to regional demands.
For instance, China can be one of the ideal markets as the demand for range-extended vehicles is rising. On the other hand, Volkswagen also plans to launch range-extending EVs in China and some other target markets, hinting at the growing demand for range-extended models.
Regarding pricing, it is still unclear how much the BMW X5 with range-extending gas engine will cost, but it is likely to be priced above the plug-in hybrid and below the fully electric iX5 model.
