Toyota has Launched a Revamped Version of Corolla in Japan, No Longer Sell Gasoline-Powered Corolla

【PCauto】 Recently, Toyota officially unveiled the all-new updated Corolla series in Japan and declared that all versions sold in the country will now feature hybrid powertrains, marking the gasoline version’s definitive exit from the lineup.
To this end, Toyota emphasized its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, with the elimination of the Corolla’s gasoline variant being a significant step toward that goal. Hybrid models can significantly reduce emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide compared to traditional gasoline vehicles.
The 2025 Corolla lineup is equipped with the THS II hybrid system, which boasts a thermal efficiency of up to 41% and fuel consumption of just 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers, greatly reducing carbon emissions during operation. In the THS II hybrid system, the engine delivers 72 kW of power, while front-wheel-drive models are paired with a 70 kW electric motor, and all-wheel-drive models add a 30 kW electric motor at the rear axle.
In addition to changes in the powertrain, the updated Corolla has seen enhancements in technology and safety features. Dashboard cameras at the front and rear have become standard across the lineup, and a digital key function has been added, allowing owners to unlock and start the vehicle easily using smartphones and other smart devices.
Furthermore, the Corolla now offers driver assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, safe exit assist, and parking assist braking. The G trim level (available in sedan and wagon versions) includes new LED fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels, improving visibility in harsh weather while giving the car a more stylish and dynamic appearance. The base X model continues to use 15-inch steel wheels with covers and omits the infotainment screen, yet retains a traditional instrument cluster.
As for pricing, the Corolla Hybrid X starts at 2,279,200 yen, approximately 515,099 Thai baht or RM66,233, while the most expensive Corolla Sport E-Four special edition wagon is priced at 3,416,600 yen, roughly equivalent to RM99,252.
With growing global awareness of environmental protection, countries are implementing increasingly stringent vehicle emission standards and carbon emissions regulations. For instance, the European Union has set more rigorous limits on pollutants in automotive exhaust, while China’s dual credit policy is encouraging manufacturers to boost their production of new energy vehicles.
Many countries have established timelines for banning the sale of gasoline vehicles, with Norway set for 2025 and the European Union for 2035. Under this high-pressure policy environment, Toyota must actively adjust its product lineup to meet regulatory requirements.
Toyota’s decision to eliminate the gasoline version of the Corolla in Japan may expand to other countries and regions, potentially extending to other models within the Toyota lineup as well.
