Chinese First Official Regulations Regarding Car Door Handle Design: Reliable and Accessible

【PCauto】As the electric vehicle market rapidly expands, hidden door handles have become a popular design choice for many automakers looking to create high-end models, thanks to their appealing technological aesthetics and reduced aerodynamic drag.
However, this design comes with potential safety risks. According to statistics from Chinese government agencies, in 2023, 21% of electric vehicle accidents in China were attributed to delays in rescue caused by door-opening failure, with design flaws in hidden handles being to blame.
In response to this issue, on May 8, 2025, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published a draft for mandatory national standards titled “Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles,” seeking for public comments. Globally, this marks the first case where a government has imposed stringent regulations on automobile door handle design.
The new regulations outline four main requirements for manufacturers when designing car door handles.
Firstly, regarding mechanical redundancy, the new rules mandate that all hidden door handles must include an independent mechanical emergency device, ensuring that doors can still be physically opened under extreme conditions such as collisions or power failures. Experts indicate that this emergency mechanism must withstand an impact force of no less than 200N, providing solid assurance for escape in emergencies.
Secondly, to address the issue of low visibilityof concealed handles, the standards require a uniform fluorescent sign to be placed within a 3-meter visual range of the door handle, with a minimum size of 5cm x 2cm, allowing users to quickly locate the door-opening mechanism.
Additionally, the emergency power supply system for electric door handles must function for more than 30 minutes, ensuring that escape routes remain accessible in accidents like vehicle fires.
Finally, the new regulations also require rigorously testing the reliability of door handles by introducing dynamic testing protocols to simulate extreme conditions such as high-speed collisions, intense heat, and immersion in water. For instance, door handles must be able to operate normally for 10 seconds even under an 800°C flame.
The scope of these new regulations is extensive, initially covering passenger vehicles with nine seats or fewer, cargo vehicles with a maximum design gross weight of ≤3.5 tons, and multipurpose vehicles. This requirement is expected to be implemented by 2026, at which point all models launched in China must comply to be granted market approval.
This initiative is set to effectively curb the automotive industry’s blind pursuit of aesthetic design, shifting the focus toward practicality and safety in vehicle design. It is likely that this regulation will inspire similar actions in other countries and regions.
