Explore Different Types Of Engines – Which One Is More Economical?

Many times, you ride in different vehicles like cars to go to your destination place. But have you ever thought about the mechanism behind the vehicle running on the road? Well, there is a fundamental and responsible auto part that keeps your car running smoothly. It is an engine that is similar to the beating heart of any vehicle. The reciprocating engine is the source of life and energy helpful to drive vehicles. An automobile without an engine travels nowhere, much like a ship without a sail. This blog will provide you with some detailed insights about the different types of engines available in India.

How Do Car Engines Work?

Here, we have curated some points to explain to you about different kinds of engines for cars that work in a simple way. Most car engines are internal combustion engines as combustion takes place internally.

  1. Intake Stroke

a car engiThe cycle ofne starts from the intake stroke in which the intake valve opens and the piston moves down. It helps in making a vacuum in the cylinder and this vacuum causes surrounding air to draw into the engine cylinder.

  1. Compression Stroke

This is the second step of the car engine in which the intake valve closes and the piston moves back upwards. It causes compression of the filled air in the engine cylinder. Compression increases the pressure and temperature of the air, making it more suitable for combustion.

  1. Combustion/ Power Stroke

Under this stroke, when the air is compressed, the spark plug ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinder. The ignited fuel-air mixture undergoes rapid combustion which helps in producing a high-pressure explosion. Further, the force of the explosion contributes to pushing down the piston again.

  1. Exhaust Stroke

After the combustion stroke happens, the role of the exhaust valve comes into the picture. The exhaust valve opens and the piston moves down again to expel the burnt gases out of the engine cylinder. In this way, these expelled gases come out of the engine and further exit from your car through the muffler.

Types of Engines in Car

Let’s explore the different types of automobile engines in a simplified way.

  1. Inline Engines

An inline engine or straight-line engine has all cylinders placed in a straight line. This engine is cost-effective and can be considered one of the most economical engines due to its low maintenance cost and fuel efficiency.

  1. V-Shaped Engines

Discussing all engine types, this engine is widely used in which two sets of cylinders are still attached over the crankshaft at an angle of around 60 to 90 degrees.

  1. Boxer (Flat) Engines

The pistons of the boxer engine move similarly to how boxers swing their fists in a horizontal plane. Their arms move side by side, but in an engine, the pistons from opposing cylinders move together.

  1. Rotary Engines

In this IC engine, combustion chambers and cylinders rotate with the driven shaft due to the pressurized gas after combustion.

  1. Internal Combustion Engines

The ignition and combustion of the fuel happens within the engine cylinder itself in the IC engines.

  1. External Combustion Engines

It is a heat engine in which an external source is burnt to heat an internal working fluid through a heat exchanger or the engine wall.

Conclusionary Views

In determining the most economical engine, it is essential to consider not only the overall ownership cost and maintenance cost but also the fuel efficiency of the technology. FAQs

Which type of engine is more economical?

An inline or straight engine is more economical due to low initial and maintenance costs.

Which engine is better: 3-cylinder or 4-cylinder?

A 3-cylinder engine is lighter in weight and smaller in size with fewer movable parts. All these factors make a 3 3-cylinder engine better with optimum fuel efficiency.

What is the difference between a Four-Stroke and a Two-Stroke Engine?

The four-stroke engines are involved in four stages with two complete crankshaft revolutions. While two-stroke engines are gone through one complete revolution with 2 strokes.

What is the full form of the IC engine?

The IC engine full form is an Internal combustion engine.
